A couple of weeks ago I went to my favourite super sento. After a long day of alternating between outdoor and bedrock baths, I sat down in front of the communal mirror and started an impromptu beauty routine.

I used a beauty oil (free sample) and gave myself a face massage, concentrating on tension points on my jawline. I dabbed off the excess and layered lotion. I saw the other women completing their routines—putting on face masks or taking out their expensive-looking creams, gently tapping products into their skin.
