In 2021, I built a (fairly) cool fashion directory with 120+ brands that were size diverse or size inclusive. I poured a lot of time and energy into building the website from scratch and despite the warm responses, I wanted to make it better. So I set myself to goal to build it again, better (is this starting to sound like an American political campaign?).

I didn't have enough financial support for the website, so I started making digital zines on Patreon. Making these zines taught me a lot about the things I found joy in creating and what I truly wanted to share.

In the middle of zine-making, there was a genocide against Palestinians by Israel. The company that published a key plugin that I was using made a website that clearly crossed a line - intentionally trying to suppress Palestinian narratives. Obviously the website was now a dud. So I'm back to rebuilding the website from scratch using a brand new plugin and another learning curve.

In the mean time, I wanted a new home for my zine-esque content AND for my directory. Substack felt right.

(Yes this newsletter is fashion-focused but I don't shy away from politics, fashion is political, fashion is global).

Limited edition designs, deadstock fabrics, sales, second hand goods. Since my digital zines would take weeks to put together, when I published them or soon after, an item I recommended could be down to limited sizes or even sell out. Plus since ethical fashion is a financially precarious business, unfortunately its not uncommon for brands to close down (even when their offerings are amazing).

Even SLOW FASHION moves fast.

A weekly newsletter just made more sense to keep up with the times.

And..

I want to build a mountain of resources, I want to build a community, I want to interrupt the spam, I want you to look forward to opening up a newsletter from me.

Substack, which acts as both a newsletter and a blog/website with a chat feature gives me the tools to bring that to life (I hope! This is still new to me.)

One of the most important parts of consuming more ethically, is curating our feeds and inboxes.

This newsletter isn’t for everyone, it’s not about perfect aesthetics, it’s raw, it’s driven by the joy of fashion NOT adhering to a particular style/body type etc. Even the art is a little weird and wonky.

But if you know anyone that will appreciate this strange ethical fashion newsletter, please share!
