Most of my experiences wearing swimwear while fat have always been a combination of hesitation and self-consciousness before feeling like I can just exist within my body, instead of outside. Where I can I feel the sensorial pleasure of being in water, instead of visualising how I might appear to others. I think it’s difficult to feel fully at home with your body when you are worried about how you will be perceived, or worse you feel unsafe.
Being around other fat people and fat community is really important. It’s that embodiment of confidence, joy and freedom that I think can only be found in spaces that support fat liberation. Including fat swims.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Accessibility—many of these events have more detailed descriptions of the pool/area and access on the ticketing page
What to bring—this depends entirely on the event. Some are BYO snacks, some have snacks provided, some don’t allow pool toys, most are no alcohol, and one is meant to be more like a nightlife party vibe
Age restrictions—a few of these are adults only, and some are designed to be family friendly
Location—although I’ve tried to look internationally, most of these are city-centric locations across the US
FAT SWIM EVENTS 2025

1. Summer Bash, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, FRI 19th to SUN 22nd June
So this is less of a stand-alone pool party; instead, it’s multi-day with lots of entertainment lined up, including a themed club night.
Where: Rodeway Inn & Suites, 2440 W State Rd 84, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312, USA
When: Jun 19th, 12PM to Jun 22nd, 11AM
How much? 239 USD. Hotel is 149 USD per night plus tax and fees.

2. Fat Swim, Albuquerque, SAT 21st June
Where: Rio Grande Pool, Albuquerque

5. Fat Beach Day, New York, SUN 29th June
Where: Jacob Riis Beach Park

Who’s running it? Jordan Underwood + Kleo
Where to get tix/sign up? Keep an eye out for more details on Jordan and Kleo’s Instagram—but I’m pretty sure it will be a show-up-on-the-day kind of deal.

14. Making Waves Fat Swim, Albany, California, most SUNDAYS
This is an ongoing weekly event.
Where: Albany Aquatic Center, 1311 Portland Avenue.
When: Most Sundays 12-1pm.
How much? 10 USD with no one turned away for lack of funds

Ample Access Outdoors. Brittany’s most recent event was in late May, and she hosted a pool party last year, so potentially one this year too?
Fat Babes of Columbus also held an event last year, and they just had a flea market in May…

Next week, we’re finishing off the denim series with a list of brands—including custom, ethics-minded, and majority fashion—with a focus on a variety of inseams.
